Remembering 90s Fashion

90s Fashion...

Take a trip down memory lane to the 90s fashion stakes!

As a child of the 80s I remember only too well what people were wearing throughout the 1990s and, amazingly, I’ve noticed that a lot of the trends that were popular during this decade are creeping back into fashion nowadays.

Of course, when I was wearing my neon tracksuit and tartan trousers I thought I was the coolest person on the planet, but one look at my old family photos and I can’t believe I went out dressed like that. Even though these sketchy fashions are on the rise again I can’t help but think that, this time, they’ve been done a lot better. I’ve already embraced a few of these recycled trends, but I still can’t believe how bad they were the first time round.

Leggings

Now, I know that leggings have come back with a vengeance and are definitely here to stay, but they’re a lot better looking these days. In the 90s leggings were worn with a huge baggy T-shirt, leg warmers and trainers and women were invariably having a go at the grunge trend, which was massive back then thanks to bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.

High waisted jeans

When I say high waisted, I mean high waisted. I remember having a pair that sat well above the belly button, but despite the fact that they now look absolutely ridiculous they were immensely comfortable. The only issue with these jeans was that if, like me, you’re a pear shape, you automatically had a bum the size of the moon as soon as you put on a pair of these jeans.

Neon

You couldn’t walk into a room in the 90s without seeing someone wearing clothing so neon it hurt your eyes. I had a shell suit (a track suit hybrid) that was neon pink and highlighter yellow and if I wore it outside in the summertime I swear I glowed. Neon’s back now, but things will never be as bright as they were in the 90s – and for good reason!

Scrunchies

While not technically an item of clothing, the scrunchie was one of the most popular accessories of the decade. No self-respecting girl tied their hair up with anything but a scrunchie, but these ginormous hair bobbles were not fashionable, not even then. They are definitely not back on the trend list for the noughties.

Crop tops

Exposed midriffs were prevalent throughout the 90s, although they weren’t allowed in my house because my mum banned that much exposed skin. Every female celebrity on the planet was photographed wearing a crop top at least once – think Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears and every member of the Spice Girls. Modern-day stars like Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Pink and Katy Perry are being this fashion back nowadays.

What awful trends do you remember from the 90s? Do you think they’ll be making a comeback anytime soon?
